RONALD E. MCNAIR POSTBACCALAUREATE ACHIEVEMENT PROGRAM

“McNair is one of eight TRIO programs funded by the U.S. Department of Education. Its purpose is to prepare eligible participants for doctoral studies through involvement in research and other scholarly activities. Participants are from disadvantaged backgrounds and have demonstrated strong academic potential. Institutions work closely with participants as they complete their undergraduate requirements. Institutions encourage participants to enroll in graduate programs and then track their progress through to the successful completion of advanced degrees. The goal is to increase the attainment of Ph.D. degrees by students from underrepresented segments of society.” — quoted from the Ronald E. McNair Program at UM.

LSMAMP IMAGE PROGRAM

“The Bridge to the Doctorate Program (BDP) is a National Science Foundation (NSF) initiative within the LSAMP Program to provide former LSAMP baccalaureate degree graduates with a fellowship for graduate STEM studies. The ultimate goal is to increase the number of minority students who obtain Ph.D. degrees in STEM fields. The program supports eligible students from schools in the MS-LSAMP alliance.” — quoted from the LSMAMP IMAGE Program at UM.

Qiu Lab has been actively participating in the LSMAMP IMAGE Program since Fall 2021.

ARISE@UM SUMMER PROGRAM

“ARISE@UM, A Research Immersive STEM Experience at the University of Mississippi, is a multi-pronged and multi-phased initiative aimed at improving STEM education and the pipeline of students pursuing STEM degrees in Mississippi. The first prong and current focus phase is devoted to providing nurturing research experiences (typically in the summer) for high school and community college students.” — quoted from the A.R.I.S.E. Summer Program at UM.

PPMG SUMMER PROGRAM

The Plant Phenomics and Molecular Genetics (PPMG) program is a summer research training program directed by Dr. Qiu and financially supported by his NSF-CAREER award. The program aims to engage underrepresented students’ interests in plant science and prepare them for successful careers. It immerses UM and MS Community College students in laboratory settings via lectures on fundamental principles of plant molecular genetics and research in genetics screens for morphogenetic mutants.

Qiu Lab has been directing the PPMG SUMMER Program since 2024.

2024 PPMG Scholars: Ava Ketner, Frankie Bahin
